Chapter 19

Waking with a start, someone banging hard on my front door. Yelling can be heard coming through from the porch. I untangle myself from Zara, waking her in the process. I grab some clothes as I yell out. “I’m coming! One sec.” Dragging on my pants and my t-shirt. Zara is rifling through her own bags to find clothes.

The banging stops as we dress and I glance at her as she pulls on her shirt before I head out of the bedroom to see what’s happening. Pulling open the door, I find my dad standing on the porch. His face is distraught, and he is breathing heavily. He must have run all the way here.

“What’s wrong, dad?”

“They are gone. They left in the night.”

“Who’s gone?”

“The Crimson Moons. They left and Vera is gone. All of the pack is gone.”

“Do you think they caught wind of Vera being our mate?”

My chest hurts, the panic setting in. My wolf rearing against my control as I slip into distress. I tamp her down, knowing I need answers first.

“I don’t know. The only ones that knew were you two, your mom, and Sasha and Ray. I don’t see Sasha and Ray saying anything to anyone. Unless Vera told them, then I don’t think that is it. But I can’t be certain. That Omega is clearly not in a good place. They could have seen her leave with Zara last night.”

I hear a gasp behind me, turning to find Zara covering her mouth. “I was as careful as possible. I don’t think anyone saw me, but I can never be certain. There were so many there last night.”

Tears well up in her eyes and I step up to her quickly, my arms encircling her. I kiss the top of her head as she buries it into my chest. “Shhh.” I soothe her. “This isn’t your fault.” I turn us both around so I can see my dad. “By foot or car?”

“Foot, then car. They left their bags and all. I don’t know if they just left in such a hurry that they decided to leave their things, but they left quickly. The place is trashed.”

I nod. “Zara, baby, can you stay here with my dad for me? I need to go to the cabins. I need to smell, to track them myself. Can you do that for me?” I lift her chin so I can see her face. She nods and I drop a kiss on her lips.

I let her go, releasing her back into the cabin. My dad nods at me as he steps past me to wait with Zara.

“I won’t be long,” I tell them as I strip my pants, my long t-shirt still covering me.

We aren’t shy when it comes to nudity, but I always feel odd when my parents are around. I wait till my dad closes the door before tearing off my shirt and shifting.

The pain rips through my body as it shifts. My bones stretch and change as they move.
